Patung Percha Design Brief

Step into a world where tradition meets sustainability with the Creative Patung Percha Challenge for Keretapi Sarong 2024! Inspired by Bangga Malaysia’s contemporary, traditional ethos, this challenge is about creativity and making an impact using RRU (reuse, recycle, upcycle) methods.

We call upon all creative Malaysians to take scraps and remnant fabrics, breathe new life into them, and turn them into contemporary traditional costumes. Transform these scraps and remnants into a doll that celebrates our Malaysian heritage and champions environmental consciousness.

Homage to Adrian Ong

Adrian Ong is a Malaccan now residing in Kuala Terengganu. An avid traditional costume maker for dolls applying the RRU concept in his works, the dolls he created not only portray the aesthetics of Malaysian costumes but proceeds from it has also helped many single parents through a charity organization he was with.

Creative Patung Percha Challenge is a homage to Adrian Ong, who has been sentimental about the sustainability of Malaysian culture through dress for overfour decades.

Theme: Contemporary Traditional

An insight into Malaysian traditional costumes in a new breath applying the RRU concept. Costumes should emphasise the origins, originality and creativity of the designer to portray the beauty and aesthetics of Malaysian Costumes. The design may apply minimum innovation to the existing look of a traditional costume and does not overshadow the originality. Emphasis should also be given to the usage of upcycled and repurposed materials.

The doll used should resemble the features of Malaysian women. Appropriation should be considered if religious or cultural symbols are used in design.
